Sod's Law. Or somebody up there has got a hell of a sense of humour. I am not remotely religious, but sometimes one wonders if there is not somebody or something out there that loves to have good old giggle at our expense. Sod's Law. The Law of Sod. The way it is.........

I don't know what it's been like where you live, but I could class that pretty miserable excuse for a summer as yet another rubbish one. OK, so August was not quite as bad as I think the previous five washouts, but still we had very few days of unbroken sunshine and genuine warmth. The kids go back to school and what do we get ? Just about the most stunning week of weather I can remember for a long time. My girls didn't actually go back to school until Wednesday of this week so I did sneak off from work for a few hours and take them for a walk and a swim down on the beach after lunch on Monday. Heaven. It's gotta be Sod's Law that summer is technically over but we go and get this awesome weather. I love the heat. I love those blue sky days when just being outside in all that gloriousness makes you feel alive. It may well be some pretty rubbish conditions for bass fishing, but I went out lure fishing for wrasse with a couple of friends yesterday and had about as much fun as fishing can be. A bunch of fish, great company, fantastic (wrasse fishing) conditions, magical scenery and not another angler in sight. Where was this kind of weather during our "summer" ? This morning is another serious stunner.............

How many times have you stepped onto a charter boat and heard tales of the mad fishing that was the day before ? Steaming out it's almost impossible to contain your excitement, but then the fish don't play ball at all. That infamous "should have been here yesterday" !! Sod's Law. But some people by virtue of this have to be on the other side of it and have been the ones who were actually there yesterday...........or is that reverse logic that doesn't actually work ?

When the weather is good as a family we spend our lives outside. By our front door is the stuff we need for getting out and about in any kind of weather, but at 5am yesterday morning I was searching around for the suncream and doing my best not to wake my wife and girls up. It's always there in the hallway on a certain shelf, I know it is, but on the one day I actually want the sodding stuff and it's not there. I finally remembered that I had left a bottle of suncream in my car from earlier in the year when I had hopes that the sun might actually come out and this did me for yesterday, but Sod's Law dictates that the one morning I go to the usual place and it's just not there. I would love to blame the puppy but there was no evidence of a chewed up bottle in her bed, and so I blame Sod and his sodding Law. I couldn't possibly blame my wife who it transpires "might have moved" it so that I can't find it....................

But the absolute worst from a fishing point of view is when the tides and conditions are awesome for a number of different spots. You make a call about fishing a certain spot and then you fail spectacularly to make that hunch pay for you - and then you hear of some other anglers who fished the other spot you had been mulling over but had decided against and they have gone and cleaned up with big fish. Why oh why had the voice in my head allowed me to go to the other spot and blank ? Sod's Law once again. If you see this Sod bloke lurking around the street corner like a steaming pile of horse manure then please give him a slap for me and tell him to Sod Off and take his Law with him. And please keep this late summer coming.............
