Fishing Tackle
Ireland – Shannon/Clare : Shore fishing on Ireland’s westerly coastline
24 April 2009
-
Spectacular rock fishing on one of the wildest, most deserted coastlines you are ever going to see. The Clare coast is seriously underfished and I would bet most visiting anglers must wonder where everybody is !! Fishing a location like this comes about only through strong local knowledge, and for that I must thank the brilliant Bill Ryan.
-
Bill Ryan with a typical Irish shore pollack, caught (and released) right under his feet on nothing more than a simple silver spinner and light tackle. How can it get any better than this ? Fish, sunshine, calm seas, stunning locations, nobody around, and awesome local fishing advice from Bill.
-
True rock-edge wrasse fishing in a sheltered gully near to Loop Head, a wild, remote part of the Clare coastline. Plenty of hard biting, hard fighting wrasse right beneath your feet. I am in heaven !!
-
Bill Ryan with the spoils of a quick wrasse session, caught on hardback crab, and successfully returned to fight again. This guy has a passion for these fish and spends many hours hiking this desolate coast looking for new marks.
-
Not enough people know that the Clare coastline can throw up some monster bass, indeed a recent Irish shore record came from around here. Perfect surf beaches face due west and catch the swells, and the local bass anglers have the place to themselves during the prime autumn and winter months. Get out there !!
-
How many people dream of fish like this ? There is a strong chance of making your dreams come true on the Clare coast, especially for the bass (and wrasse, trigger fish, mullet, conger, huss, ray, wrasse, pollack, cod, sharks, tope etc…)
-
The mullet fishing around places like Kilkee and Kilrush is simply waiting to be discovered. The fish are there, I have seen good ones landed, and I have seen monsters swimming around, but still hardly anybody bothers to fish for them. A concerted effort will in my mind show that this part of Ireland has mullet fishing to rival anywhere.

One special thing that this part of Ireland has is the mighty Shannon estuary. During virtually any weather or whatever the wind direction, anglers can find some kind of shelter in the Shannon and fish for the plentiful thornback rays and bull huss. Bill Ryan catches stacks of good rays virtually all year, but here he is with a nice huss caught in a quiet, flat calm tributary of the Shannon. All keen shore anglers should try to fish this part of the world, for these is something for everybody and I can safely say that somewhere is fishable whatever the weather decides to throw at you !!!
