Yes I know, we should all be terribly grownup here and realise that we might not actually need so many different coloured lures for our fishing. We should not be getting excited about little bits of plastic that don’t exactly come that cheap, and of course we don’t see our mates catch on something and then panic-buy every version of it we can find - what, me? Not a chance, I’m far too mature to engage in silly behaviour like this. Logic is a wonderful thing at times, but quite frankly that logic can fly out the frigging window and sod the hell off when I get to see three brand new, custom-coloured IMA Salt Skimmers like I have in my grubby mitts here. Wow. If there is a surface lure heaven, then I would like to suggest that adorning the pearly gates are these three Skimmers as I float on through to paradise - and I’ll grab them on the way in………..
If you are the kind of angler who doesn’t get excited about new lures and new colours then this blog post is resolutely not for you, but as this whole lure fishing addiction within me continues to worsen, I am increasingly taking comfort from the fact that there are many anglers out there who are in the same boat as me. Hell, I think there might be some who’ve got it worse - no names mentioned of course. We all have our favourite lures that give us an extra jolt of confidence when we clip them on, and for the last few years the smallish and ridiculously long-casting IMA Salt Skimmer has been my go-to surface lure for bass fishing. It makes no difference to me whether you do or do not love the Skimmer, and I can only say it how I see it myself. To me it’s a killer, end of, and you can read a blog post about this surface lure right here.
Anyway, custom colours, or rather, I’ve got the Skimmer in three gorgeous colours here that nobody else has, and I categorically would never have sent out windup messages to a few fishing mates alerting them to this fact. Nope, I’m too grownup to do stuff like that, and my girls (9 and 11) are definitely not working out that they might well be more mature than their father. Sorry, I digress. A number of us have been on at the Bass Lures/Top Water people for a while now to get involved with some UK only colours of a lure like the IMA Salt Skimmer, and I will give you one guess which one here I was pushing for the most. Is it wrong to kiss a lure? Is it ok to stroke it?
I just like surface lures that have bright, white or seethrough bellies, so you can see why these three brand new colours do it for me so much, and of course that lemon-back, whitish cotton candy one is making me feel all weak at the knees especially. And yes, I have caressed it. Multiple times in fact. I cannot wait to get these new Skimmers out fishing, and with a couple of mates catching and losing bass last weekend, hopes are up that things might kick off properly once we lose these east winds and crystal clear seas. Don’t get me wrong, sunny skies and a bit of warmth are more than welcome here, but I wonder what’s going to happen when we get back to S and SW winds. Whatever does actually happen, these new Skimmers are coming with me.
OK, so I have these lures and they are the only three in existence in these colours I believe, to the point that the nice people at Bass Lures don’t even have any after they kindly sent me these three. I think they might be expecting these samples back sometime soon, but guess what? Not a frigging chance these custom-coloured Salt Skimmers are leaving my clutches. Anyway, I said that in return for me getting a chance to see and fish with these three brand new Skimmers that I would tell you lot what is going on with them - I believe that they will be available here in the UK in June, so if you know of a fishing tackle shop that sells IMA lures then either hassle them to get these things in, or of course you will be able to get them online at Bass Lures etc. in due course - if there are any left that is after I have put my own order in. If your shop doesn’t sell IMA then get them to contact Top Water Lures, the people behind Bass Lures and who actually import IMA into the UK.
And of course we have England going for a Grand Slam at 8pm tomorrow evening. I have done my best to curb my mounting excitement, but I can’t help it. I am bloody excited about this, our first chance of some meaningful silverware in far, far too long. I am trying not to get my hopes up too much, and of course I expect plenty of ups and downs back to World Domination, but is this really a new dawn? Is this really the beginning of a brand new era where the rather impressive Eddie Jones manages to harness the depth of talent that resides within the squad? Look at how Maro Itoje played against Wales, and to me it was pretty damn scary that at a mere 21 years old he was head and shoulders the standout player on the pitch. England for the Grand Slam? Be still my beating heart, but have the French got one French style of game in them as they sometimes produce from out of the blue?
