I'VE GOT X TO SPEND ON A ROD AND REEL

I get a lot of emails and messages asking me for advice on what lure rods and spinning reels to buy to suit various budgets, so here are my suggestions. Please accept as ever that these are merely my opinions, and the rods and reels I really like may well not suit you. All the rods and reels below are available to buy in the UK.

I want a good lure rod and it has to be under £100

Good news! Well under £100 can buy you a pretty damn good lure fishing rod for bass, the £69.99 Favorite Cobalt CBL-902M 9’ 9g-28g rod. Review here.

I’ve got around £100 to spend on a lure rod

Simple. Beg or borrow that extra £20 or so and buy the ridiculously good HTO Nebula M 9' (2.7m) 7-35g lure rod. Should cost a lot more if you ask me. Review here.

I am all over this thing. Holy cow the Tailwalk EGinn 96ML-R 9'6'' Max 35g lure rod is insanely good at working all kinds of hard and soft lures up to 35g. Such precision. I want one for myself. Review here.

I’ve put aside up to £300 for a very special, more powerful lure rod

Within about a session of fishing with this incredible Tailwalk EGinn 106M-R 10'6'' Max 45g lure rod I had decided that it had to be a part of my armoury. Yes, it’s that good, and the 10’6’’ length feels so easy to manage I don’t even think about it anymore. Review to come.

I need a really good lure rod for wrasse fishing

The Major Craft Crostage Hard Rock CRX-802MH/S 5-30g. This is one hell of a rod for bumping soft plastic lures along the bottom. Review to come.

What spinning reel for around £100?

The Penn Clash 2500 or 3000. A very powerful reel, nice and light, don’t overload it, love the handle. Review here.

I want a spinning reel that can take some proper saltwater abuse

Not as light as a Shimano or a Daiwa of the same size, but damn this awesome Penn Slammer III 3500 can take some abuse and come through smiling. Review here.
