I'VE GOT X TO SPEND ON A ROD AND REEL
I get a lot of emails and messages asking me for advice on what lure rods and spinning reels to buy to suit various budgets, so here are my suggestions. Please accept as ever that these are merely my opinions, and the rods and reels I really like may well not suit you. All the rods and reels below are available to buy in the UK.
I need a travel-style lure rod for bass, wrasse and pollack fishing
Finally, a truly “proper” lure rod that you can break down into four sections and fly with it if needs be. The HTO Nebula M 2.7m (9’) 7-35g Travel 4-piece is here and I think it’s pretty much perfect. Easily as good as the 2-piece. Review here.
I want a good lure rod and it has to be under £100
I’m after a 9’ lure rod for no more than £200
Finally, a more than worthy successor to the 9’ Skyroad, indeed I prefer this outstanding new Major Craft Triple Cross EU Custom 9’ 10-30g lure rod. A penny under the £200 mark buys a serious lure fishing rod. Review here.
I’m after a 9’6’’ lure rod for no more than £200
I want a truly versatile, near as dammit “do it all” lure rod
I loved this incredible HTO Shore Game S932ML 9'3'' 7-30g from my very first cast with it - it’s the perfect length for me, it covers so much of my bass fishing, it’s light, it’s fast, it’s essentially perfect. If I had to get rod of every single lure rod I owned and just have the one? It would be hard to look beyond this one. Some rod. See my review here.
I’ve put aside up to £300 for a very special 9’6’’ lure rod
I am all over this thing. Holy cow the Tailwalk EGinn 96ML-R 9'6'' Max 35g lure rod is insanely good at working all kinds of hard and soft lures up to 35g. Such precision. I want one for myself. Review here.
I’ve put aside up to £300 for a very special, more powerful lure rod
Within about a session of fishing with this incredible Tailwalk EGinn 106M-R 10'6'' Max 45g lure rod I had decided that it had to be a part of my armoury. Yes, it’s that good, and the 10’6’’ length feels so easy to manage I don’t even think about it anymore. Review here.
I need a really good lure rod for wrasse fishing
The Major Craft Crostage Hard Rock CRX-802MH/S 5-30g. This is one hell of a rod for bumping soft plastic lures along the bottom. Review to come.

What spinning reel for around £100+?
The Penn Spinfisher VI range, and specifically the 2500, 3500 4500 sizes. I am really starting to like these tough as hell spinning reels. Further info in a couple of blog posts here and here, reviews to come.
I want a spinning reel that can take some proper saltwater abuse
I have an urge to splash out on a spinning reel
