My go-to bass fishing lures

MY GO-TO BASS FISHING LURES

The various lure categories within the Fishing Tackle section of this website keep getting larger the more lures I try, so I thought it might be helpful to create a new page here which summarises the information into a simple list of my go-to bass fishing lures - those bass fishing lures that rarely if ever leave the two lures boxes that I take out fishing with me. You can find more detailed descriptions of these lures in their various categories at the bottom of the page. So in no particular order, here goes:

OSP DoLive Stick 6’’

The most lethal “twitchbait/jerkbait” style soft plastic I have ever come across, and I nearly always fish it rigged weedless and weightless on the Owner Twistlock Gary Yamamoto Spec size 5/0 or 6/0 hook. I find myself using the DoLive Stick more and more and I like to carry a few different colours with me.

Available here in the UK.

Now available in white - yippee! - here.

Soft plastic of the year 2018.

Fiiish Black Minnow

What more do I need to say about the Fiiish Black Minnow? I dread to think how many big bass these killer paddletails have caught since they came into existence. Loads of different sizes of body and heads, but my most used size for shore fishing is the 120mm body, and then I vary the weight of the head depending on where I am and how I need to be fishing it.

Available here in the UK.

Xorus Patchinko 125 (125mm, 18g)

The medium size Xorus Patchinko 125 hasn’t been on the market for long, but already it’s a staple in my lure box. With how well this long distance, killer surface lure is working for more and more bass nuts (me included), it begs the question as to why on earth it took Ultimate Fishing so long to come out with this particular size of Patchinko.

Available here and here in the UK.

Xorus Patchinko II (140mm, 27g)

When you need some serious distance or the sea is kicking up nicely, I know of no other surface lure that gets you out there so well and consistently smashes bass like the Xorus Patchinko II.

Available here and here in the UK.

Whiplash Factory Spittin’ Wire (95mm, 15.5g)

This awesome surface lure has become a “can’t leave out of my lure box” very quickly. Casts like a little bullet, nice and splashy when you walk it, holy cow have I seriously fallen for this Whiplash Factory Spittin’ Wire. I can’t recall more aggressive hits from bass on any other surface lures I have fished with. Not cheap, but this is where I buy mine. Worth every penny if you ask me.

Available here in the UK.

Hard lure of the year 2018.

Savage Gear Sandeel

A deadly simple paddletail and jig head combination that in various sizes casts really well and just keeps on smashing bass on a simple straight retrieve. The more I fish the north coast of Cornwall especially, the more these Savage Gear Sandeels are coming with me.

Available here in the UK.

IMA Salt Skimmer (110mm, 14g)

As and when I clip a surface lure on, if the conditions allow then more than likely it will be the IMA Salt Skimmer. It’s amazing how well this comparatively little surface lure casts, and I find again and again that bass just love it.

Available here and here in the UK.

Shimano Exsence Responder 109F (109mm, 15g)

A class bit of kit. Casts a mile, swims so nice and shallow, bass love it, and after nearly a year of use and/or it living in my lure box I just can’t see any signs of rust or damage on this stunning Shimano Exsence Responder 109F.

Available here in the UK.

Special mention hard lure of the year 2018.

DUO Tide Minnow Slim 140 (140mm, 18g)

Long casting, swims fairly shallow, and I just love how the narrow bib on the DUO Tide Minnow Slim 140 gives it such an intense, concentrated sort of action in all kinds of sea conditions.

Available here in the UK.

IMA Komomo SF-125 (125mm, 16g)

Without doubt my most used ultra-shallow diving hard lure. I just feel so damn confident when I’ve got the IMA Komomo SF-125 on.

Available here and here in the UK.

IMA iBorn 98f Shallow (98mm, 13g)

When I want a smaller but very long casting ultra-shallow hard lure, this is the one I turn to the most. Bass just seem to love that intense sort of wiggle action on this IMA iBorn 98f Shallow.

Available here in the UK.

Wave Fishing 5’’ Bamboo Stick (5'', 15g)

In white especially this has been a deadly lure for me when night fishing for bass, plus during the day as well. Slightly fatter and heavier than a regular senko, I just love these Wave Fishing 5’’ Bamboo Sticks.

Available here in the UK.

IMA Sasuke

Mainly the 120 (17g) and the 140 (20g) size. A staple lure in many lure boxes I am sure. Great casters, incredibly grippy, and you can fish them fast or slow and they so often sort the bass out.

Available here in the UK.

Jim’s Lures needlefish

Handmade needlefish that are not cheap and do not come rigged with hooks and split rings, but I really like these lures and they are catching more and more bass for me at night. Simple but very deadly.

Available here in the UK.

MegaBass X140SW (140mm, 19.5g)

One of my regular hard lures that comes out when conditions start to get a bit bouncy especially, the MegaBass X-140SW is a classic. Pure quality from MegaBass, and I have seen a number of good bass taken on these lures.

Available here in the UK.

IMA Hound 125F Glide (125mm, 20g)

When the wind starts to blow and the sea starts to bounce, nine times out of ten the IMA Hound 125F Glide is the first hard lure out of my box. Now discontinued I believe (gutted!).

You can still find this lure here on Ebay, I have bought from this “shop” before and it works great.

By miles the best lure clip I have ever used, this Breakaway Mini Link lure clip has performed flawlessly for me for a few years now and I can’t find a clip I like more. Cheap, simple, and perfect for my hard and soft bass lures. Review here.
